Catz Honorary Fellow appointed to the Court of Appeal

St Catherine’s College is delighted to announce that The Honorable Mr Justice Ian Dove (1982, Law) has been appointed to the Court of Appeal as Lord Justice of Appeal, having served as a Justice of the High Court (King’s Bench Division) since 2014.

Sir Ian came up in 1982 to read Law under the tutelage of Derek Davies and Erik Barendt, before being called to the Bar at Inner Temple in 1986 and taking silk in 2003. He was appointed an Honorary Fellow of the College in 2016, following his appointment to the High Court Bench. During his judicial career, Sir Ian has served as a Presiding Judge on the Northern Circuit from 2018 to 2021, as President of the Upper Tribunal, Immigration and Asylum Chamber from 2022, and as Deputy Senior President of Tribunals from 2025.

We extend the warmest congratulations to Sir Ian Dove for this honour. Professor Andrew Dickinson, Senior Tutor and Fellow in Law, notes: “Sir Ian was the first student of the College to be appointed as a High Court Judge, and now becomes the first to be appointed to serve in the Court of Appeal. We are delighted that his expertise, particularly in matters of public law, has been recognised in what is a highly competitive process.”

Catz Honorary Fellow appointed to the Court of Appeal

St Catherine’s College is delighted to announce that The Honorable Mr Justice Ian Dove (1982, Law) has been appointed to the Court of Appeal. This distinction recognises Sir Dove’s term on the High Court Bench, as well as his judicial experience.

Sir Dove came up in 1982 to read Law; in 2016, he was appointed an Honorary Fellow of the College, having received his Knighthood in 2015. He was called to the Bar at Inner Temple in 1986, and has since been described as “an extremely client-focused, sharp, and commercial barrister.”

Sir Dove is a judge of the High Court of England and Wales, and a highly respected barrister in the fields of Environmental and Public Law. He has spent much of his career at No. 5 Chambers. In 2014, he was appointed as a High Court Judge to the King’s Bench Division, and then as the President of the Upper Tribunal, Immigration and Asylum Chamber in late 2022.

Alongside Sir Ian Dove, the appointments of Mrs Justice Cockerill, Mr Justice Foxton, Mrs Justice May, Mr Justice Miles, and Mrs Justice Yip have been approved.
